What must be evaluated at each iteration of the bisection method ?
Choose one option.
A The derivative at the midpoint B The second derivative at both endpoints C The integral of the function D The function at the midpoint
Show answer D. The function at the midpoint
← Back to the question
Explanation Only f at the midpoint is required to compare its sign with that of an endpoint. Derivatives are not needed in this method.
The bisection method is an iterative algorithm that approximates a root of a continuous function \( f(x) \) on an interval \( [a, b] \) with a sign change, halving the interval at each step.
\[c_n = \frac{a_n + b_n}{2},\quad |c_n - r| \le \frac{b-a}{2^{n+1}}\]
