Exercise · ZW-SAMPLE-MEAN-005 · ★★☆ Intermediate
With \(\sigma=10\) and \(n=25\), what is the standard deviation of \(\bar X\)?
Choose one option.
A \(2\) B \(4\) C \(0.4\) D \(10\)
Show answer
← Back to the question
Explanation \(\sigma/\sqrt n=10/5=2\). Dividing by \(n\) instead of \(\sqrt n\) would give the mistaken \(0.4\).
The sample mean \(\bar X\) is the arithmetic average of the \(n\) variables \(X_i\) of a random sample ; since it depends on the sample, it is itself a random variable .
\[\bar X=\dfrac{1}{n}\sum_{i=1}^{n}X_i\]
