Exercise · ZW-SAMPLE-MEAN-009 · ★★☆ Intermediate
A group of 10 data points has mean 4 and another of 30 has mean 8. What is the mean of all 40 together?
Choose one option.
A \(7\) B \(6\) C \(5\) D \(8\)
Show answer
← Back to the question
Explanation \(\tfrac{10\cdot4+30\cdot8}{40}=\tfrac{280}{40}=7\). Averaging 4 and 8 without weights would give \(6\).
The sample mean \(\bar X\) is the arithmetic average of the \(n\) variables \(X_i\) of a random sample ; since it depends on the sample, it is itself a random variable .
\[\bar X=\dfrac{1}{n}\sum_{i=1}^{n}X_i\]
