Exercise · ZW-EQUIVALENCE-CLASS-002 · ★☆☆ Basic
What is the quotient set \(A/R\)?
Choose one option.
Show answer
- A. The set of all equivalence classes of \(R\)
← Back to the question
Explanation
The elements of \(A/R\) are the equivalence classes of \(R\), not the elements of \(A\) nor the pairs of the relation.
Given an equivalence relation \(R\) on \(A\) and an element \(a\in A\), the equivalence class \([a]\) is the set of all \(x\in A\) with \(x\,R\,a\).
\[[a]=\{x\in A : x\,R\,a\}\]
