Exercise · ZW-EXPECTED-VALUE-002 · ★☆☆ Basic
A fair die is rolled and \(X\) is the number shown. What is \(E[X]\)?
Choose one option.
Show answer
← Back to the question
Explanation
\(E[X]=\tfrac16(1+2+\cdots+6)=\tfrac{21}{6}=3.5\). The value 21 is the sum without dividing by 6.
The expectation \(E[X]\) of a random variable \(X\) is the average of its possible values, each weighted by its probability.
\[\begin{aligned}E[X]&=\sum_x x\,p(x)\\ E[X]&=\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}x\,f(x)\,dx\end{aligned}\]
