Exercise · ZW-EXPECTED-VALUE-007 · ★★☆ Intermediate
Which statement about \(E[X]\) is correct?
Choose one option.
Show answer
- C. It is the average of the values of \(X\) weighted by their probabilities.
← Back to the question
Explanation
The expected value is a weighted average. It need not be a possible value (for a die it is 3.5), nor the mode, nor the median.
The expectation \(E[X]\) of a random variable \(X\) is the average of its possible values, each weighted by its probability.
\[\begin{aligned}E[X]&=\sum_x x\,p(x)\\ E[X]&=\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}x\,f(x)\,dx\end{aligned}\]
