Exercise · ZW-GREATEST-COMMON-DIVISOR-004 · ★☆☆ Basic
Compute \(\gcd(48,180)\).
Choose one option.
Show answer
← Back to the question
Explanation
\(48=2^4\cdot3\) and \(180=2^2\cdot3^2\cdot5\). Take the common primes with the smaller exponent: \(2^2\cdot3=12\).
The greatest common divisor \(\gcd(a,b)\) of two integers \(a\) and \(b\), not both zero, is the largest integer that divides both.
\[\gcd(a,b)=\max\{d\in\mathbb{Z}:\ d\mid a,\ d\mid b\}\]
