Which of these subsets of \(\mathbb{R}^2\) is linearly independent ?
Choose one option.
A \(\{(1,2),(3,6)\}\) B \(\{(0,0),(1,1)\}\) C \(\{(1,1),(1,-1)\}\) D \(\{(1,2),(-2,-4)\}\)
Show answer

Explanation No multiple of \((1,1)\) gives \((1,-1)\). In the others one vector is a multiple of the other or is the zero vector.
A set of vectors is linearly independent if the only linear combination of them that gives the zero vector is the one with all coefficients equal to zero.
\[c_1v_1+\cdots+c_kv_k=0\ \Rightarrow\ c_1=\cdots=c_k=0\]
