Exercise · ZW-BINARY-RELATION-010 · ★★★ Advanced
Let \(A=\{1,2,3,4\}\) and \(R=\{(a,b)\in A\times A : a+b \text{ is even}\}\). How many pairs does \(R\) have?
Choose one option.
Show answer
← Back to the question
Explanation
\(a+b\) is even exactly when \(a\) and \(b\) have the same parity. A has 2 odd and 2 even numbers, so there are \(2\cdot 2+2\cdot 2=8\) pairs.
A set of ordered pairs \((a,b)\) specifying which elements of \(A\) are related to which elements of \(B\).
\[R \subseteq A \times B\]
