Which law of composition always holds?
Choose one option.
A Every \(f\) has an inverse even if it is not bijective B \(g\circ f\) always has the domain of \(g\) C It is commutative: \(f\circ g=g\circ f\) D It is associative: \(h\circ(g\circ f)=(h\circ g)\circ f\)
Show answer D. It is associative: \(h\circ(g\circ f)=(h\circ g)\circ f\)
← Back to the question
Explanation Composition is associative: grouping \(h\circ(g\circ f)\) or \((h\circ g)\circ f\) gives the same function . It is not commutative , as \(f(x)=x+1\) and \(g(x)=2x\) show.
The composition \(g\circ f\) applies \(f\) first and then \(g\). The inverse \(f^{-1}\) exists when \(f\) is bijective and undoes its action.
\[(g\circ f)(x)=g(f(x)), \quad (g\circ f)^{-1}=f^{-1}\circ g^{-1}\]
