Show answer
- D. \(\frac{1}{4}\)
Exercise · ZW-DERIVATIVE-006 · ★★☆ Intermediate
Choose one option.
The difference quotient is \(\dfrac{f(4+h)-f(4)}{h}=\frac{\sqrt{h + 4} - 2}{h}\). As h → 0 it tends to \(\frac{1}{4}\), which is f'(4).
The derivative of \(f\) at \(a\) is the limit of the difference quotient as \(h\to0\). It measures the instantaneous rate of change and is the slope of the tangent line at \((a,f(a))\).
