Compute \(D_{\mathbf{u}}f(1,1)\) for \(f(x,y)=x^2+y^2\) and \(\mathbf{u}=\langle\tfrac{1}{\sqrt2},\tfrac{1}{\sqrt2}\rangle\).
Choose one option.
A \(4\) B \(\sqrt2\) C \(2\) D \(2\sqrt2\)
Show answer
← Back to the question
Explanation \(\nabla f(1,1)=\langle2,2\rangle\), so \(D_{\mathbf{u}}f=\tfrac{2}{\sqrt2}+\tfrac{2}{\sqrt2}=2\sqrt2\).
The directional derivative \(D_{\mathbf{u}}f\) of \(f\) at a point \(\mathbf{x}_0\), along a unit vector \(\mathbf{u}\), is the rate of change of \(f\) moving from \(\mathbf{x}_0\) in the direction of \(\mathbf{u}\).
\[D_{\mathbf{u}}f(\mathbf{x}_0)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{f(\mathbf{x}_0+h\mathbf{u})-f(\mathbf{x}_0)}{h}\]
