Compute \(\dfrac{\partial}{\partial x}\sin(xy)\).
Choose one option.
A \(y \cos{\left(x y \right)}\) B \(x \cos{\left(x y \right)}\) C \(\cos{\left(x y \right)}\) D \(- y \sin{\left(x y \right)}\)
Show answer A. \(y \cos{\left(x y \right)}\)
← Back to the question
Explanation Chain rule with \(y\) constant: the derivative of \(xy\) with respect to \(x\) is \(y\), so the result is \(y\cos(xy)\).
The partial derivative of a function \(f(x,y)\) with respect to \(x\) at a point \((a,b)\) is the ordinary derivative of the one-variable function obtained by fixing \(y=b\) and letting only \(x\) vary.
\[f_x(a,b)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{f(a+h,b)-f(a,b)}{h}\]
