Exercise · ZW-GROUP-ACTION-010 · ★★★ Advanced

For an arbitrary group \(G\), which formula always defines an action of \(G\) on itself?

Choose one option.

Show answer
  • B. \(g\cdot x=gx\)

Explanation

With \(g\cdot x=gx\) we have \(e\cdot x=x\) and \((gh)\cdot x=g\cdot(h\cdot x)\) by associativity. The others fail in non-abelian groups: for instance, \(g^{-1}(h^{-1}x)\) is not \((gh)^{-1}x\).

Review the concept: Group action

An action of a group \(G\) on a set \(X\) assigns to each \(g,h\in G\) and \(x\in X\) an element \(g\cdot x\in X\), so that the identity \(e\) moves nothing and the product of \(G\) acts by composition.

\[e\cdot x=x,\qquad (gh)\cdot x=g\cdot(h\cdot x)\]
