Explanation

Every element of \(\mathbb{Z}_5\) has the same number of preimages, equal to the size of the kernel; so \(15=5\cdot|\ker\varphi|\) and the kernel has \(3\) elements.

Review the concept: Kernel of a homomorphism

The kernel of a group homomorphism \(\varphi\colon G\to H\) is the set of elements of \(G\) that \(\varphi\) sends to the identity \(e_H\) of \(H\).

\[\ker\varphi=\{g\in G:\ \varphi(g)=e_H\}\]
